Animal charities including the RSPCA are worried that the recession is having a knock on affect on the nation’s pets. As people struggle financially, some pet owners are now abandoning their animals. Sadly the RSPCA reports that the number of animals abandoned in England and Wales in 2008 rose by 57% compared with the previous year.

At the start of RSPCA Week running from 27th April until the 3rd May, the RSPCA report they dealt with 11,586 dumped animals last year, an average of more than 30 animals abandoned every day of the year. This, compared to 7,347 abandoned animals in 2007. This is the RSPCA’s figures alone, there are other national and small local animal charities which would also have taken in dumped animals. It is an offence to abandon animals. If you have financial difficulties in caring for your pets, the RSPCA urge you to contact them for assistance. Please do not neglect or abandon your animals.

As a nation of supposed animal lovers, these numbers are appalling. The above video carrys the message A Pet is For Life… Not Just for Christmas. Perhaps it should be extended to include “or Financial Good Times”.

RSPCA Week (27 April – 3 May), is the RSPCA’s largest annual fundraising and awareness-raising week and they have just relaunched an urgent public appeal for help in what has been described as The Biggest Animal Rescue Ever due to the increased amount of animals they are having to take in.
