Take a Breakthrough Breast Cancer UK Trekking Challenge
Leave the first response May 14, 2009 / Posted in Breakthrough Breast CancerSummer is nearly here, the sun is out (well, it’s been above 10 degrees C for a few days!) so it’s time to get out and about and enjoy the beautiful British countryside and get some of that exercise the Government and carrot munchers keep nagging us all about.
Get fit and raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer at the same time by taking one of their UK Trekking Challenges (or you just have your head shaved as in the video below)! There are walks with 3 levels of difficulty, so there is something to suit most people, especially with a bit of training.
The Hadrian’s Wall Challenge which takes place from Friday 29th – Sunday 31st May is a 22 mile trek following in the footsteps of the Roman soldiers through some of the most beautiful parts of the country.
Snowdonia Mountain Challenge takes place over Friday 24th – Sunday 26th July and is a Boot Level 3 challenge (the hardest!) which involves climbing the highest mountain in England and Wales, Mount Snowdon. This is a 21 mile trek across rugged mountain terrain and not for the fainthearted!
If you sign up to one of these treks, there is an added bonus as Breakthrough Breast Cancer has teamed up with Virgin Active Gyms to offer all of of the 2009 UK Trekkers a free day gym pass and the top fundraiser a free six month gym membership. Click here for more information.

Help the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres Joy of Living Campaign
Leave the first response May 11, 2009 / Posted in MaggiesMaggie’s Cancer Caring Centres provide free support to all those affected by cancer including patients, carers, families and friends. Every centre is built beside an NHS cancer hospital which means they are easy to access whilst visiting the hospital. Each centre while close to the hospital is a completely separate building with an open plan design, with comfy chairs, interesting artwork and to make visitors feel even more at home, the kettle is always on!
Above is a video of Maggie’s MegaHikers as they go the distance on the UK’s ultimate 24hour team challenge to raise funds for the centres. Blimey – they’re more than a bit brave doing that walk!
Cancer specialists are on hand to provide information and support including benefits advice, nutritional workshops, psychological support both individually and in groups, courses and stress reducing strategies. The centre also offers the opportunity to meet people going through similar experiences. You don’t have to make an appointment, or be referred and everything they offer is free of charge.
Maggie’s Centres aim to raise £15 million in their Joy of Living Campaign for their five new centres based at major cancer hospitals throughout the UK at Churchill Hospital Oxford, Cheltenham General Hospital, Singleton Hospital Swansea, City Hospital Nottingham and Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.

Help Greenpeace Save Orang-utans and the Rainforest
Leave the first response May 8, 2009 / Posted in GreenpeaceGreenpeace are campaigning to preserve the Indonesia rainforests, habitat to endangered orang-utans and home to 50 million people. These forests are giving destroyed faster than any other in the world. The main reason? The beauty industry’s demand for palm oil which is used in a huge variety of everyday products from soap to chocolate.
Greenpeace have succeeded in obtaining support from the largest buyer of palm oil in the world, Unilever, in their campaign to stop more forest and peat marshes being destroyed.
Greenpeace relies entirely on the support of individuals and they need your donations so they can carry on their work to save the Indonesian rainforests. You can donate money by either a one off payment or by a regular direct debit. This is what your money can do:
£3 a month – could help the build on their success with Unilever
£5 a month – help Greenpeace get other palm oil buyers to support them
£10 a month – help them investigate palm oil growers
Click here for more information on how to donate.
To highlight their cause last year, Greenpeace activists scaled a Unilever dressed as orangutans!

A Pet is For Life… Pass on the RSPCA Week Message
Leave the first response April 28, 2009 / Posted in RSPCAAnimal charities including the RSPCA are worried that the recession is having a knock on affect on the nation’s pets. As people struggle financially, some pet owners are now abandoning their animals. Sadly the RSPCA reports that the number of animals abandoned in England and Wales in 2008 rose by 57% compared with the previous year.
At the start of RSPCA Week running from 27th April until the 3rd May, the RSPCA report they dealt with 11,586 dumped animals last year, an average of more than 30 animals abandoned every day of the year. This, compared to 7,347 abandoned animals in 2007. This is the RSPCA’s figures alone, there are other national and small local animal charities which would also have taken in dumped animals. It is an offence to abandon animals. If you have financial difficulties in caring for your pets, the RSPCA urge you to contact them for assistance. Please do not neglect or abandon your animals.
As a nation of supposed animal lovers, these numbers are appalling. The above video carrys the message A Pet is For Life… Not Just for Christmas. Perhaps it should be extended to include “or Financial Good Times”.
RSPCA Week (27 April – 3 May), is the RSPCA’s largest annual fundraising and awareness-raising week and they have just relaunched an urgent public appeal for help in what has been described as The Biggest Animal Rescue Ever due to the increased amount of animals they are having to take in. For more details and information on how to donate to the appeal, click here.
