Rage against the Machine were live via satellite phone on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning to talk about the Rage Against the Machine Christmas No.1 Campaign and they confirmed that in addition to the donations to Shelter made by buyers of the record in the UK, the group will also donate proceeds from the sales of their single to the charity.

At the end of the interview with the band and the Facebook group’s co-founder Jon Morter, Rage Against the Machine performed a very censored version of the song, right up until the very end… enjoy! The clip below does include swearing towards the end, so avoid if you are easily offended.

The song is cut short by the producer saying “we told them not to do that”. Seriously, what did they expect? You can almost get the feeling that Nicky Campbell would have been happy to let them carry on till the end of the song.

Rage Against the Machine to be Christmas Number 1?

Will the Rage Against the Machine track, Killing In The Name Of, be Christmas number 1 this year? Let’s hope so! The Facebook group that started a few weeks ago in an attempt to end The X Factor Christmas no.1 monopoly, has captured the imagination of the nation. At time of writing over 800,222 users have joined the group and they have raised over £42,743.51 for the charity Shelter by asking members to make a donation on the Just Giving website when they buy a copy of the single.

However, Ladbrokes have Joe McElderry favourite at 1/5 with Rage Against The Machine at 3/1 in second place, well ahead of Lady Gaga at 25/1. A quick scan in Tesco (other supermarkets are available) earlier today in the CD section only had the new single releases and no RATM. If this is indicative of most supermarkets, then unfortunately the X Factor tune may sneaky it as shoppers pick up a copy with their their Christmas shopping!

So, if you haven’t already bought your copy of the Rage Against the Machine song, visit the campaign information page on Facebook, join the group and buy your copy of Killing in the Name this week! Available at most good record stores – but not in a Tesco in Swansea. Next week will be too late!

Children in Need Charity Record is Number 1 in the UK Charts!

The Children in Need official single is number 1 in the charts! Peter Kay and the Animated All Star Band have achieved the first number one for the charity since 2004 when Girls Aloud topped the chart with their cover of The Pretenders’ song I’ll Stand By You.

The Animated All Star Band is made up of over 100 world famous icons from old favourites such as the legendary Bagpuss,Bill and Ben, Postman Pat, Sooty and Sweep, The Thunderbirds, Thomas the Tank Engine and The Wombles lining up alongside new faces including Bob The Builder, Fifi and the Flowertots, In The Night Garden, and of course the axe-man himself, Pudsey Bear. Work for your Favourite Charity with Vodafone

Volunteers are an essential part of a charity’s work and without them, a good many would not be able to survive. As the current economic climate remains grim, with less grants and funding being awarded to charities as well as public donations decreasing, the volunteer worker has never been so essential to a charity’s survival.

Vodafone are giving you the chance to get a two month paid placement at a charity of your choice in the UK in their World of Difference 2009 scheme which is run by the Vodafone Foundation registered charity no. 1089625.

To apply, send in your details along with the charity you would like to work for. You will also need to contact your nominated charity to discuss your placement. If you are successful, the Vodafone Foundation will pay the charity you choose to work with £2500. The Blue Cross BBC One Lifeline Appeal on Sunday 25th October

The Blue Cross is a lifeline for animals, a pet charity for animals in the UK giving support, information and advice for pet owners. They have been chosen as the subject of a BBC Lifeline Appeal which is being presented by the lovely actress and celebrity supporter Felicity Kendal.

The appeal will be first shown on BBC One at 16:25 on Sunday 25th October and repeated on Wednesday 28th October on BBC Two at 14:00.

The program will feature animals and people who have benefited from the charitable work of The Blue Cross. Viewers will be able to meet Carlos, the huge Great Dane and his owner, Mr Brennan, who both have heart problems.

The Blue Cross doesn’t receive any government funding, but thanks to the kindness of the public, they can ensure that pets get the love and attention they deserve. Unfortunately, despite the hundreds of owners and animals that they are able to reach every day, there are still many more that need help. Lifeline is the BBC’s monthly television charity appeal programme. For more than twenty years, Lifeline has helped raise money for and increase the profile for UK charities.

Coldplay Donate £1 million to Children’s Charity Kids Company

We’re accustomed to bands making the headlines for all the wrong reasons, so it’s a nice change to see a group of musicians being praised for their philanthropic activities, even if the band is Coldplay

Joking aside, the band have donated £1 million pounds to the South London based Kids Company, a charity founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996 in order to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. The band have visited the charity a few times to see the work they are doing in the local communities and plan to return to give music lessons to the children who attend their centres.

Just to remind us of how great Coldplay are, below is the official video for the new single, Strawberry Swing.

It’s a shame this news has not been reported across more of the media, perhaps if news channels widened their focus from misbehaving celebs to more positive role models like Coldplay, more people would be encouraged to get involved with charitable work.

National Vegetarian Week 18th- 24th May

This week is National Vegetarian Week in the UK. Running from Monday 18th to Sunday 24th May, the week is an annual event organised by the Vegetarian Society charity and being sponsored this year by Cauldron Foods, to highlight the benefits of following a meat free lifestyle.

To celebrate, there are events happening around the country including Vegetarian Cooking Demonstrations, a Cardiff Vegetarian Festival, meat free markets and free food tastings. Also, Something for the Weekend chef, Eccles cake fanatic and anti-Welsh cake vegetarian restaurant owner Simon Rimmer is guest chef at the Newcastle Festival of Food and Wine.

Even if you are not vegetarian, try some of the meat free recipes on the website, we think the Marinated Halloumi Cheese Skewers with Mediterranean Vegetables sounds particularly yummy.

Justgiving Earns Charity Over £250million!

Charity fund raising site Just Giving has apparently helped £250million to be raised since it started life online in 2003 according to today’s Guardian. Described as the “easy and efficient way to donate and raise money for charity” fundraisers and charities can set up their own free web page and use it to get sponsors for their chosen event.

For example many runners have created their own special pages for this year’s Flora London Marathon. They’re able to collect donations and even better as they claim Gift Aid automatically too. The site makes it’s money by charging 5% commission on gross donations (donation + Gift Aid), plus VAT.

If you’re a charity or just looking to raise funds for your school, local hospice or scout group then you can register with Justgiving today! Note that it costs £15 a month (plus VAT) to be registered with them, however hospices are offering a 3 month free trial.

The site is aimed at UK fundraisers, but there’s good news for USA residents as they can use Firstgiving.com which is run by the same company.

Mystery Donation Helps Sport Relief to £20million!

BBC’s Sport Relief charity fundraising event was helped by a massive £5.5million mystery donation (The BBC). It was the largest telephone donation ever made in the 22 years of Comic Relief. That donation, plus money raised thanks to the likes of celebrity boxing, an Alan Shearer and Adrian Chiles bike ride, and a swim to Africa by David Walliams and James Cracknell meant that the overall total was around £20million.

You can still donate to Sport Relief via the official website as well as relive some of the highlights of the evening. Plus you can support the cause by buying the official Sport Relief single Better in Time from Leona Lewis.

If you prefer something a little sportier then there’s a special Sport Relief football DVD presented by ex-Soccer AM and now Something for the Weekend presenter Tim Lovejoy called Football Managers Uncut – A Guide to the Game’s Greatest Gaffers.

At least £2 from each DVD goes to the Sport Relief charity.
